The George Carlin Routine That Got Him Investigated by the FBI

The George Carlin routine on The Jackie Gleason Show in 1969 led to the FBI investigating after viewers complained about Carlin's impression of then-FBI director J. Edgar Hoover. The 12-page FBI file contains letters from viewers expressing outrage at Carlin’s impersonation of Hoover, which prompted an internal memo asking, "What do we know of Carlin?" However, it appears that the bureau had no data concerning Carlin and suggested that Carlin may have used the prestige of the bureau and Hoover to enhance his performance. The memo also suggested that thank-you letters should be sent to the complainants.
