The future of the internet economy lies in the form of AI agents, according to some in the crypto industry. These agents, who can't open bank accounts due to bank verification, are expected to make one million times more payments than humans, all in crypto. However, this imbalance is exacerbated by the fact that agents don't shop the same way humans do. Each agent's task involves calling dozens of specialized APIs in a single session, which could be worth fractions of a cent. The cost of reporting and publishing an article might be under two cents, compared to Stripe's minimum processing fee of $0.30. The thesis behind x402, a payment protocol that embeds stablecoin payments directly into HTTP requests, is that agents can continue their task without needing human attention. However the infrastructure is ahead of the demand, with x402 currently processing around $28,000 daily volume.
