However, late night host Seth Meyers traced the team's bad luck back to a single image from 2006 where President Trump was seen lurking in the background. Meyers explained that his crew, who are Mets fans, had initially thought they may have cursed the team when Mr. and Mrs. Matches stopped by the show at the start of the season and gifted Cue Card Wally a jersey, despite being a Yankees fan. He also revealed that the curse actually goes back to 2006, when the team was eliminated from the playoffs by the Cardinals when their star player, Carlos Beltrán, struck out looking.
