Vanessa A. Williamson's book, "The Price of Democracy: The Revolutionary Power of Taxation in American History," reveals that the American Revolution was not about taxes, but about the desire for Americans to tax themselves. The Sons of Liberty, the Founding Fathers, were actually opposing the bailout of the East India Company. In 1787, the framers of the Constitution agreed that the wealthy few should be protected from the masses. In 1857, Hinton Helper advocated for taxing slavery out of existence, and in 1913, the 16th Amendment gave Congress power to collect taxes on incomes. Despite opposition from the few, the many could influence tax policies, which led to Social Security and Medicare being created.
