The King William County Board of Supervisors has delayed a decision on an ordinance that would encourage data centers in the county. The proposed amendment to county codes aims to encourage investment in technology uses while protecting adjacent residential areas and environmental impacts. The Board of Supervisor's decision comes amid growing concerns about the impact of these facilities in Virginia, which is the world's largest data center market. The ordinance includes restrictions such as an 80-foot height limit on prospective data centers and specific noise, lighting and screening requirements. The planning commission voted unanimously in favor of the ordinance at its meeting on March 3. However, neighboring New Kent County has balked at the idea of a streamlined procedure for data centers without needing special use permits and public hearings.
