Indian transparency activists, journalists set for court fight over Modi's privacy law

Transparency activists and journalists are taking to the Supreme Court in India over the government's new privacy law, which they argue will have a "chilling" effect on journalism and allow officials to withhold information of ‘public interest’. The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, which excludes personal information, has been criticised by media and activists for diluting a 20-year-old Right to Information (RTI) law. The lawsuits argue that this change should be quashed and undermines constitutional principles. India's ranking in the Centre for Law and Democracy's tracker has fallen from two in 2013 to nine currently.
