Democrats Flip Mar-A-Lago Seat In Major Upset As Blue Wave Comes To Trump's Backyard

Democrats have won a Florida State House seat that backed President Donald Trump in 2024, including that includes his Mar-a-Lago residence. Democrat Emily Gregory defeated Republican Jon Maples, winning 51.1% of the vote to 48.9%. The seat is the president's home seat, which he carried by double digits during his successful reelection run. On the same night, Democrats also flipped a Tampa-based State Senate seat, while Republicans held another seat in a more rural and conservative part of the state. The special election was part of a larger effort to replace former Republican Florida State Rep. Mike Caruso, who resigned from House District 87 in August 2025 after DeSantis appointed him as Florida Gov. Ron Deesantis. Over $1 million had been spent on both candidates.
