Péter Magyar, the main political opponent of Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, has called for an alleged backchannel between Budapest and Moscow to be investigated as "treason". This follows reports that the Hungarian government has long provided Russia with detailed information from EU Council meetings. Magryar alleges that Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjárto appears to be colluding with Russia and betraying Hungarian and European interests. If confirmed, this could amount to treason, which carries a potential life sentence. The Washington Post reported that the government has been providing Moscow access to sensitive discussions within the European Union for years. Prime Minister Orbán has ordered his government to investigate the alleged "wiretapping" of Foreign Minister Szijajártó, who has made 16 official visits to Moscow since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The European Commission is seeking information directly from Hungary regarding the allegations.
