Houses of worship need buffer zones

The New York City Council recently passed a bill allowing police to create security perimeters around houses of worship. This action is urgent as many Jewish New Yorkers feel less safe entering a house of worship without feeling harassed or threatened. The American Jewish Committee's State of Antisemitism in America 2025 report found that 91% of American Jews feel less secure due to violent attacks in the past year, including the burning of a Jewish governor’s home, the firebombing of Jews in Boulder, Colorado, and the murders of two Israeli embassy staffers in Washington, D.C. The proposal for buffer zones should be carefully crafted to respect First Amendment protections.
