OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is facing a backlash over the company's deal with the Pentagon, which was announced just hours after President Trump called Anthropic "leftwing nut jobs" and ordered all federal agencies to stop working with them. The announcement was so rushed that Altman himself admitted it was a mistake. Outside of the company’s San Francisco HQ, activists wrote messages in chalk criticizing the Pentagon deal. At a tense all-hands meeting, Altman defended the deal and insisted that OpenAI had made the right call by agreeing to work with the Department of War. The company's contract includes language ensuring that its AI models can be used without human oversight.
