A trade group for social media companies, NetChoice, has asked a federal judge to block a new Minnesota law that requires warnings about the negative effects of extended social media use. The law, which was adopted last year, would require tech companies to warn users of negative mental health effects from prolonged use of social media. Trade association NetChoice argues that the disclaimer is a political statement and would violate their First Amendment rights. The group is asking for a preliminary injunction to halt the law while the dispute is argued in court. This comes as social media firms face increasing public pressure to change their business model and regulate their businesses. In March, juries in California and New Mexico found social media platforms liable for harming minors. Other states have also passed laws that require social companies to disclose details about how much time users spend on their platforms and the algorithms used to push content towards users.
