The 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence is being celebrated by local arts institutions across North Carolina. The initiative America250, led by a Congress-appointed committee, has been planning for this milestone through calls for celebration and civic involvement. However, the Trump administration has made clear that a certain kind of history should be told in a certain way. This has led cultural institutions to navigate this transition, particularly in light of heightened tensions between the country and Iran. Two upcoming concerts will use this occasion to bring together multidisciplinary North Carolina artists for musical reflections about the American experiment. The Durham Symphony Orchestra will commemorate America’s founding with its 50th anniversary on May 6.
