Arizona reckons with Chávez legacy

Arizona leaders are facing a public reckoning over the legacy of late civil rights leader César Chávez, following allegations that he sexually abused minors during his time leading the Chicano movement. Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego and Councilmembers Betty Guardado and Laura Pastor want the City Council to vote to rename the city's holiday as Farmworkers Day and remove street signs and facilities bearing his name. The process will require council approval. Mesa will immediately remove the honorary Calle Cesar Chavez street signs. The New York Times found extensive evidence that Cháved had sexually abused multiple young girls while leading the farmworkers movement in the 1970s. Once the name is removed, labor leaders and activists will focus on separating the impact and legacy of the movement from the man who led it.
