Djamil Lakhdar-Hamina, a research assistant at the University of Maryland, has been criticized for suggesting that bombing parts of Los Angeles and Miami to kill Cuban and Iranian Americans who support President Trump's military strikes against Iran. The remarks were made in a video posted on YouTube by Cosmonaut Magazine, a socialist publication. The term "gusanos" has historically been used as a slur by the Cuban communist regime to refer to Cuban exiles and critics of Fidel Castro. Critics have labelled the remarks as an apparent call for violence in two of the country’s largest cities, LA and Miami, which are home to large Iranian and Cuban American populations. The comments were also flagged by Canary Mission, an organization that documents anti-semitism.
