Sylvanian City Councilman Doug Haynam has proposed a proposed ordinance related to federal immigration action, stating that no one in the city should be discriminated against based on immigration status and that it should not use limited city resources for federal immigration enforcement. Some supporters argue that the police department is capable of making its own decisions and does not need another set of rules. Others, like Barbara Shaffner, believe that supporting ICE is a form of mutual aid and that local police officers are not the ones searching for people in the country illegally. The proposal was approved by every council member but Haynam. The city administration has until 90 days to create a new ordinance.
