Evanston City Council is moving to increase penalties for landlords who violate city code following a dispute between Quadrel Realty Group, a Chicago-based private equity company, and several unionized southeast Evanston tenants. The City Council unanimously approved a proposal to add new fines from $100 to $1,000 per violation, per day, to the Residential Landlord Tenant Ordinance (RLTO). The ordinance will be finalised on April 13. The move comes as negotiations between the company and the union are stalled due to ongoing disputes over lease renewal discrepancies.
