The Pittsburgh Pirates are in contract negotiations with 19-year-old shortstop Konnor Griffin. The two teams have been discussing this issue since spring training, and the Pirates' offer is closer to the eight-year, $111 million deal Corbin Carroll signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2023. Griffin, who turns 20 later this month, was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2024 draft and is ESPN's No. 1 prospect for 2026. Signing Griffin to the Pirates would likely be seen as a sign of good faith by the fan base, which has been frustrated by team's low payrolls and competitive struggles over the past decade.
