In Lebanon, Israel is using occupation as negotiating tool, say analysts

Israel is using its military occupation of southern Lebanon and the displacement crisis to influence ceasefire terms, according to experts. This strategy is seen as a strategy by Israel to gain greater leverage in any negotiations. The Israeli military has imposed forced evacuation orders and bombings on Beirut and other areas in southern Lebanon, killing about 850 people and displacing over one million people. French President Emmanuel Macron has proposed direct talks between Lebanon and Israel in Paris, warning that “everything must be done to prevent Lebanon from descending into chaos”. However, analysts suggest that the Israeli military, rather than French diplomacy, is setting the agenda for the proposed talks. The strategy is also revealed as Israel has amassed six military divisions along its northern border and aims to impose a radically altered security architecture.
