When Tansy Simpson gave birth to her son, Atlas, initially thought he had acid reflux, but doctors initially diagnosed him with an enlarged heart and fluid filling up his lungs. He was referred to a feeding support team and a pediatrician at Evelina London Children's Hospital, where he was diagnosed with coarctation and ventricular septal defect (VSD). The defect is caused by a narrowing of the aorta in the heart, making the heart work harder to pump blood around his body and causing him to strain his system. Atlas underwent open-heart surgery to remove the narrowed part of the artery and remove the VSD. Despite spending four weeks in intensive care after recovering from his surgery, Atlas has been well-received and continues to live happily with no long-term issues expected.
