The Maywood, a suburban Chicago suburb, has been preserving its Bataan Day commitment for over 80 years by preserving the memory of its young men, Company B of the 192nd Tank Battalion. The battalion was deployed to the Philippine Islands in 1941 before the Japanese Army landed on Luzon, where Company B was stationed, successfully evading the U.S. Air Force and most of the Navy based on the islands. The Japanese Army invaded Luzon on Dec. 21, 1941, overwhelming American defenses and destroying critical supplies. Company B and its fellow soldiers surrendered on April 9, 1942, only 43 of the original complement survived the war. The Maywood community's response to the loss of Company B began out of grief and frustration over a lack of information and prepared Red Cross packages for their sons' sons. The efforts of the Maywood supporters continued after the war, recognizing the surviving members of the full 192nd Battalion and redeeming the honor of its POWs. A Veterans Memorial was dedicated in 1992 at Veterans Memorial Maywood Park, where memorial services have continued to be held.
