Bioengineer Kiana Aran spent five days alone in a pitch black cave in rural Poland, strapped with biosensors, and left with a range of biological data. The removal of light and sound caused changes in her senses, her immune system, and her microbiome. She emerged five days later with data that she hopes can be used to gain a better understanding of the human body and consciousness in settings devoid of external stimuli. Aran plans to conduct further sensory deprivation experiments to better understand how humans interpret external stimuli or deal with the lack of it. The experiment was conducted by Aran and her colleagues and collected extensive data before, during, and after her cave experience to see how her body was changing. The data analysis also revealed that her immune response was activated and that her glucose levels remained stable even after meals.
