Elgin officials have announced that a new roundabout planned for the Highland and Lyle Avenues intersection will be different from the former roundabouts. The Public Services Director, Mike Pubentz, stated that the new design will improve safety and reduce the frequency and intensity of crashes. An engineering study found there were 26 crashes between 2019 and 2023, with 75% of these crashes involved broadside collisions. The new roundover is a single-lane roundabout, designed to be more seamless and safer for pedestrians. It will also accommodate box trucks, school emergency equipment, and fire trucks. The $1.4 million project is funded through federal funding programs. Construction is set to start in May and will be closed for three months.
