Washington wolf population reaches highest level in years

Washington's gray wolf population rose in 2025, reversing a decline from the previous year to a minimum of 270, according to a state report. This is the highest level in decades and reflects years of recovery efforts. The gray wolves are now considered endangered in the western two-thirds of the state and could face fines of $5,000 or up to one year in prison under state law. For the removal of these species from the state, multiple breeding pairs would require to reside in the state's southern Cascades and northwest coast.
