As Trump eyes Cuba, my trips there a decade ago remind me how different things were

The U.S. has threatened a "friendly takeover" of Cuba, citing its weakened economy as its next target. This comes as President Donald Trump continues to escalate tensions with the communist-run island. The White House has cut off Cuba's oil supply and threatened to do so, amid ongoing military operations in Venezuela and Iran. This was a decade ago when it appeared that relations between the two countries would normalize after decades of hostility. The Cuban government had seized US property and American-owned businesses in response to a growing U-S embargo, and President John F. Kennedy formalized a full embargo in 1962. In July 2015, President Barack Obama announced the restoration of diplomatic ties with Cuba. Travel restrictions for Americans were relaxed and trade began to resume. However, the embargo remains in place.
