Global lithium demand could exceed 13 million tonnes by 2050, according to Wood Mackenzie’s latest Energy Transition Outlook for Lithium. The warning comes as global EV demand increases, with forecasts that shortages could start as early as 2028. The study suggests four energy transition pathways, including a Delayed Transition, Base Case, Country Pledges, and Net Zero, where lithium demand increases beyond balanced. The research director at Wood Mackenzys called for immediate action as governments progress policies toward Net Zero. Despite recycling increasing, the study still leaves a significant gap in supply. The investment required for this investment ranges from $104 billion to $276 billion.
