Former Commerce Secretary, Gina Raimondo, has stated that universal basic income (UBI) would not be an effective strategy against AI-driven job loss. Her comments come as Democrats are trying to establish winning positions on AI ahead of the midterms and the 2028 presidential race. She believes that AI can make humans more productive and healthier, but also expressed concern about the 2- to 5-year outlook. She suggested that the U.S. should not follow Europe's lead on AI regulation, arguing that the region has no great AI companies. Additionally, she suggested policies to encourage companies to invest in retraining and redeployment in response to AI.
