A new AI Scam is targeting thousands of authors in advance of the release of their books, with emails promising to increase their visibility promising social media campaigns, podcast appearances, and book club membership. These emails were sent by purported publishing professionals with names ranging from Dorothy Stratton to extra-terrestrial. The fee for these services was not mentioned, but follow-up emails would cite estimates ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars. The scam was so convincing that author Patrick Radden Keefe, author of Say Nothing and Empire of Pain, found the scam a week after discovering that almost all his peers were receiving thousands of emails. The AI productivity boom may not yet have affected the economy, but it has turbocharged this type of scam.
