Clevelanders’ lake access is what matters. Time to close Burke: Austin N. Davis
Published on April 19, 2026.
Austin N. Davis, member of Cleveland City Council whose ward includes the lakefront, argues that the current financial situation at Burke Lakefront Airport is clear. It costs $3.3 million to keep the airport open and only generates $1.6 million from its parking lot, compared to the parking lot at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Hopkins, which provides more revenue for its operations, could pass on the costs of Burke to every Hopkins traveler. Davis argues that Burke is a two-mile-long, 450-acre wall between people and the water and argues that Clevelanders deserve unbridled access to our lake. He also notes that redeveloping Burke can't create new financial liabilities, which would mean fewer streets paved.
