The $84 billion FedEx has chosen partnerships with robotics companies over proprietary tech as a strategy to keep up with its peers in the race towards automation in warehouses. The company's recent partnership with SoftBank-owned robotics company Berkshire Grey has led to the development of a bot designed for bulk package unloading, or removing large bundles of multiple parcels from a truck at once. The robots will be introduced to FedEx warehouses through a pilot program later this year. While these robots won't work with every single door of FedEx's thousands of unloading doors, the company hopes to scale the bot if successful. FedEx's director of advanced technology and innovation, robotics, Stephanie Cook, said that bulk unloading is one of the most physically demanding and unpredictable jobs in the FedEx warehouse. She also mentioned that the company is looking to automate the most dangerous and physically demanding jobs at its warehouses first.
