Out of the way: Legislature must pass Super Speeders bill speedily

The Stop Super Speeders bill, written by Brooklyn Sen. Andrew Gounardes, is supported by the state Senate, Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, and Gov. Hochul and Mayor Mamdani. The bill would require vehicles repeatedly caught by automatic speed traffic cameras to install speed-limiting devices for repeat offenders. This is not a fundamental right but a limited privilege granted to operate a 2-ton machine that could potentially injure or kill. The legislation has broad support from multiple district attorneys, the National Transportation Safety Board and over 170 other organizations. However, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie is reportedly working to derail the bill behind the scenes, despite most of his colleagues understanding its necessity.
