Amarie Alowonle, a 19-year-old North St. Paul teen, was fatally shot nearly a year ago at a park in Robbinsdale, Minnesota. The second annual Missing and Murdered Black Women and Girls Day on the Hill aims to raise awareness about the disproportionate violence faced by Black women and girls, highlighting the disproportionate level of violence and inadequate investigations and gaps in the justice system. Kaleena Burkes, the office's director, said the day is about visibility, accountability and honoring the lives of Black women who have been overlooked. The Office for Missing & Murdered Indigenous Relatives tracks missing persons cases and is mandated to report on missing persons and homicide cases, along with correlates of domestic violence and human trafficking. There are currently over 100 missing Black women/girls in Minnesota.
