A judge in Santa Clara County has ordered some fundraising records from District Attorney Jeff Rosen's office to be turned over to defense attorneys to determine if Rosen has a conflict of interest in a case against five pro-Palestinian activists. The documents are part of a recusal motion seeking to prevent Rosen and his entire office from retrying the case against the "Stanford 5." The defendants are charged following a June 2024 demonstration at Stanford University, where protesters demanded that the school divest from companies linked to Israel over the war in Gaza. Deputy Public Defender Avi Singh, representing defendant German Gonzalez, argued that Rosen was using the prosecution to raise campaign funds. The defense is seeking records from Rosen’s campaign and financial receipts from fundraising platform Anedot Inc. Both sides are expected to return to court next week to argue their recusal motions. The judge ruled that several requests were legally valid and that the release of these documents could potentially lead to admissible evidence and infringe on due process rights.
