New Consumer Reports tests find heavy metals in many baby formulas

A new investigation by Consumer Reports has found heavy metals in more than half of the infant formula it tested, despite the Food and Drug Administration's promise to tighten oversight. The study found that 26 of 49 formulas contained inorganic arsenic at or above CR's level of concern, and three powdered formulas exceeded CR's levels of concern for lead. The U.S. still has no federal limits on arsenic in infant formula. Despite these findings, Consumer Reports' Sana Mujahid, senior manager of food safety research and testing, has urged parents not to panic and to consult their pediatrician before switching formulas.
