Garrett Crochet was scheduled to start against the Minnesota Twins on Sunday but will instead pitch in a minor league game. Red Sox manager Alex Cora stated that this was due to the need to align Crochet for his Opening Day start next week and following rotation turns. The move allows him to gain an extra day of rest throughout the first month of games, which includes five Red Sox off-days. Crochet has stated he prefers to pitch every five days, but the Red Sox have been cautious with him last spring. Marcelo Mayer's absence from Sunday's lineup is more concerning due to knee soreness. This leaves a significant gap in the team already without utility-man Romy Gonzalez.
