A severe weather event in Missouri killed a female emu and injured a male rhea, causing significant damage to Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield. The storm also damaged vehicles and roofs. The zoo remained closed on April 29 and plans to reopen on Thursday, April 30. The male rheast, named Oscar, is doing well and is under veterinary care. The National Weather Service measured 4-inch hail after the first wave of the storm. The emu is the second-largest living bird in the world after the ostrich.
