Rina Lazo, a 20th-century muralist, was part of a movement that recognized pre-Hispanic heritage as a vital source of artistic renewal and native pride. Lazo embraced the aesthetics and motives of Mesoamerican art in her paintings. She studied under Mexican muralists Diego Rivera and Carlos Orozco Romero and was introduced as an assistant to Diego Rivera on a project, the now iconic “Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in the Alameda Central” in Mexico City. Despite initially aiming to be an astronomer, Lazo pursued a career as a painter and enrolled in the mural art class at La Esmeralda, Mexico’s National School of Art. She later returned to painting and teaching about the original techniques and materials involved in original originals.
