Most 911 Calls To NYPD Not Crime-Related, Study Finds

A study conducted by the Vera Institute of Justice has found that most 911 calls to the New York City Police Department were not crime-related. The study, which compared more than 3.6 million calls to over 3.5 million in 2025, found that only 42 percent of the calls were labeled "crime related". The study also found that 58 percent of calls resulted in police responses involved non-crime activity. The findings come as Mayor Zohran Mamdani has proposed creating a Department of Community Safety aimed at reducing the number of police responses to certain emergency calls.
