The UK government is investing nearly £93m to replace more than 180 buses with electric vehicles in Sheffield, costing £33.4m and £58.3m from South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA). An additional £26m will be invested by SYMCA to upgrade infrastructure and prepare the Olive Grove bus depot for the 186 new vehicles. The scheme will be implemented from September 2027, with routes, timetables and tickets to be decided locally. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said the funding will replace polluting diesel buses with new electric vehicles that will improve people's daily lives and clean up the air they all breathe. The investment is part of a £73.2m package for zero-emissions buses across England and follows a £20m investment in 2025.
