Democrat Analilia Mejia has won the special election for a U.S. House seat in New Jersey, defeating Republican Joe Hathaway. Mejía will complete the congressional term of Democrat Mikie Sherrill who was elected governor in November. She ran on a platform of affordability for the working class, including increasing funding for child care and raising taxes on the highest earners. Her endorsements included those from prominent progressive lawmakers such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Both candidates will return to the ballot in June for their party primaries for the next two-year term.
