A study has found a new field of natural glass from a 6-million-year-old meteorite strike in Brazil, creating a rare tektite, a rare type of glass that occurs after terrestrial rocks are melted when they hit the surface of the planet. The discovery led by geologist Álvaro Penteado Crósta and senior professor at the Institute of Geosciences at the State University of Campinas. The impact of the meteorite impact occurred roughly 6.3 million years ago, according to radioactive dating of argon isotopes. The study also revealed that the discovery resulted in the collection of around 500 specimens found within a strewn field at least 90 km [56 miles] long. Since the study was published, more tektites have been found, with at least 600 total. The material was neither pure nor homogeneous nor pinpointed, and the original material was lacking in pinpointing what scientists found.
