Ghana's licensed cocoa buyers lack funds to buy beans from farmers despite the government's recent move to lower the fixed price it sets for the chocolate ingredient. The pricing mismatch previously led to at least 50,000 tons of unsold beans piling up at ports before the market regulator Cocobod moved to cut the price. Three sources, including one at the state-owned Produce Buying Company, confirmed that buyers lack sufficient funds to purchase cocoa. The regulator's recent fund disbursements have reportedly been used towards outstanding debts on delivered beans. With farmer prices still above global prices, opposition lawmakers have warned that Cocobbod may be forced into another cut.
