The U.S. Supreme Court is hearing arguments about whether ballots that arrive after election day should be counted in Oregon. Currently, 14 states allow ballots to be counted if they arrive after the election day, as long as they are postmarked before the day. However, in Oregon, those ballots can be counted up to seven days after the event. Marion County Clerk Bill Burgess believes this is essential for secure elections due to funding cuts to USPS. If the court rules against grace periods, it will give election officials only a few months to inform voters about new deadlines. Oregon Secretary of State Tobias Read is updating guidance for voters regardless of the court's decision.
