Planet Comicon Kansas City draws 75,000 people, boosts downtown economy

Planet Comicon Kansas City, one of the region's largest pop culture events, attracted 75,000 attendees and boosted downtown businesses. The event, which includes seven different hotels, over 2000 hotel nights, generated an estimated $14 million in economic impact just from this weekend alone. The convention also introduced new audiences to different types of pop culture and introduced new customers to its niche audience. Comic book book vendor William Binderup, owner of Elite Comic, said the event made all kinds of new customers and allowed him to showcase items that are difficult to move in a traditional storefront. Despite the expanded programming and celebrity appearances, Binderups said comics are still the main business.
