Massive new logging plans for Oregon need more time for public scrutiny, lawmakers say

Oregon's congressional Democrats are urging federal officials to give the public more time to comment on new plans that would open up millions of acres of federal forests in Oregon to logging activity not seen since the 1960s. The Bureau of Land Management announced plans to change the Western Oregon Resource Management Plans, which govern logging and conservation on 2.5 million acres of forests in 17 Oregon counties. The stated goals are to increase timber production in areas that are home to federally protected species. The lawmakers have requested 60 more days of public comment and for officials to hold at least one in-person public meeting in each affected area.
