Supporters of open primaries and ranked choice voting are challenging the Alaska Division of Elections over its latest change to the wording of a ballot initiative that seeks to repeal Alaska's current election system. The initiative, if approved by voters, would undo laws enacted through a 2020 ballot measure that implemented nonpartisan open primaries, top-four ranked choice general elections, and new campaign finance reporting requirements. If approved, it would revert Alaska's elections to partisan primaries and pick-one general elections. Critics argue that the voting system has confused voters and weakened the ability of political party members to influence election outcomes. The state initially defended the original ballot language, but changed it in February to read, "repealing recent campaign finance laws". Despite this change, both proponents of the current voting system and opponents of the initiative have not dropped their lawsuit.
