The Djidji Ayokwe, an ancestral talking drum of the Atchan people living in Ivory Coast, has been returned to the country for the first time. The drum, which was confiscated in 1916, was initially kept at the governor's Palace in Abidjan before being sent to France in 1930. It was previously displayed at the Quai Branly Museum in Paris. The Ivorian culture ministry is seeking the restitution of 148 artifacts from France. The return of the talking drum is seen as a source of joy and pride for the Atkan people, who used it to alert them to forced labour operations and to mobilize fighters.
