Essex Fire and Rescue Service responded to reports of a fire in a downstairs flat in Westcliff-on-Sea, which spread to other homes. Five people were rescued from the building and another four managed to escape. The fire was believed to have been caused by a lit cigarette. The incident left nine people homeless and prompted the service to issue fire safety advice and check for working smoke alarms.
