The National Lightning Safety Council (NLSC) has revealed that Florida is the most likely state to be hit by lightning, with 97 confirmed deaths over the past two decades. The NLSC tracked this data using data from the National Weather Service and the NLCS. Florida experiences more lightning strikes per square mile than any other state and averages about 1.2 million lightning strikes each year. In the last nine years alone, Florida reported 51 deaths by lightning accounting for roughly 1/4 of all national lightning fatalities. Texas was the runner-up for electrical activity, with 42 lightning deaths from 2006 through 2025. However, when adjusted for population size, Wyoming records the highest lightning fatality rate in the nation at 5.13 deaths per million residents, followed by Alabama, and Montana at 4.50.
