The Trump administration is planning to fast-track federal executions with electric chairs and firing squads. The move is part of the administration's strategy to execute as many as possible. The Justice Department has proposed legislation to make it harder to identify who is providing the drugs for executions, and suggested that federal agencies could produce a drug commonly used in executions called pentobarbital so the government wouldn't have to rely on outside providers. The department also suggested allowing federal executions by firing squad, the electric chair, and lethal gas. Current law requires federal executions to be carried out by lethal injection or a method allowed by the state in which the sentence is imposed. However, public support for the death penalty has been steadily declining, with public opinion now around 52% supporting the use of it.
