Ada County Sheriff Matt Clifford issues statement on Idaho immigration bill proposal
Published on March 25, 2026.
Ada County Sheriff Matt Clifford has issued a statement opposing legislation that would have required local and county sheriff’s offices in Idaho to partner with federal immigration officials. The bill, House Bill 659, would require local law enforcement to apply for a 287(g) agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which allows local agencies to work with ICE enforcement and hold immigrants in jail who face deportation. Clifford stated that the idea that Ada County Sheriff does not cooperate with ICE is incorrect and that the agreement would create redundancy and cost taxpayers money without providing additional public safety benefits.
